Chevrolet Camaro 1LE, 2013

  • Chevrolet Camaro 1LE, 2013

The road-racing-inspired Chevrolet Camaro 1LE performance package returns for 2013 with unique gearing, suspension tuning and tires that make the model capable of more than 1 g of lateral acceleration and a sub-three minute lap time at Virginia International Raceway's Grand Course. It is offered on Camaro SS coupes with manual transmissions.

The 1LE package is offered on 1SS and 2SS coupe models with an exclusive Tremec TR6060-MM6 six-speed manual transmission. Paired with a numerically higher 3.91 final-drive ratio, the close-ratio gearing of the transmission is tuned for road-racing performance. As with the ZL1, the 1LE transmission features a standard air-to-liquid cooling system for track use.

The Chevrolet Camaro 1LE also features exclusive, monotube rear dampers instead of the twin-tube dampers on SS models. The new hardware allowed engineers to tune the 1LE suspension to focus on optimal body-motion control while preserving much of the ride quality and wheel-motion control of the Camaro SS.

The other changes to optimize the 1LE for track-day use:
Larger, 27-mm solid front stabilizer bar, and 28-mm solid rear stabilizer bar for improved body control
Higher-capacity rear-axle half shafts to cope with increased levels of traction
Strut tower brace for improved steering feel and response
    ZL1-based 20 x 10-inch front and 20 x 10-inch aluminum wheels
285/35ZR20 Goodyear Eagle Supercar G:2 tires front and rear (identical to the front tires for ZL1)
ZL1 wheel bearings, toe links and rear shock mounts for improved on-track performance
ZL1 high-capacity fuel pump and additional fuel pickups for improved fuel delivery during high-load cornering.

Visually, the 1LE package is distinguished by its matte black hood, front splitter and rear spoiler - as well as the 10-spoke ZL1-based wheels, which are finished in black. The functional front splitter and rear spoiler contribute to the car's on-track performance by helping to reduce aerodynamic lift at high speeds.

Inside, the Chevrolet Camaro 1LE package incorporates the ZL1's flat-bottom steering wheel, trimmed in sueded-microfiber and designed for easier heel-and-toe driving on the racetrack. The quick-acting, short-throw shifter from the ZL1 is also trimmed in sueded-microfiber.

In anticipation of consumers entering the 1LE in amateur-racing events, Chevrolet is pursuing SCCA approval of the 1LE package for Touring Class competition.

The first Chevrolet Camaro 1LE package was introduced in 1988, inspired by Camaro's involvement in Pro-Am road racing.

Buick Encore, 2013

  • Buick Encore, 2013

The Buick introduced the all-new 2013 Encore - a luxury small crossover that delivers Buick's signature style, interior acoustic refinement and collection of luxury amenities in a maneuverable, versatile and efficient package.

The Buick Encore is on display at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and goes on sale in early 2013.

Buick models continue to gain in popularity, with two consecutive years of higher retail sales. The Encore joins Verano - Buick's third all-new sedan in three years - to round out the brand's lineup and continues the momentum established by the Enclave crossover almost five years ago.

With room for five and up to 48.4 cubic feet (1,372 liters) of storage space with the rear seat folded, the Buick Encore offers substantial cargo capacity along with the confident, higher driving position, all-wheel-drive capability and contemporary styling of a crossover.

Additional features include 10 standard air bags and an Ecotec 1.4L turbo four-cylinder/six-speed automatic powertrain, along with standard and available technologies such as Buick's voice-activated IntelliLink - which uses Bluetooth or a USB to connect the driver's smartphone to a high-resolution, full-color seven-inch LCD display radio.

And because it's a Buick, QuietTuning is standard on the Encore, which also features Buick's first use of active noise cancellation technology.

Contemporary design offers versatile spaciousness
In keeping with the global design language that has come to symbolize the brand, the Buick Encore's sculpted and elegant styling traits - including sweeping character lines - make it instantly identifiable as a contemporary Buick. Signature cues include a waterfall grille, chrome accents and surrounds, portholes on the hood and painted lower panels, similar to the Enclave.

"The Encore brings Buick's timeless, sculptural design to the crossover segment in a way that blends elegance, efficiency and utility," said David Lyon, executive director of design. "There's confidence in its athletic stance and elemental beauty in its rich details."

Blue-accented projector-beam headlamps and detailed taillamps enhance the premium appearance; and 18-inch, five-spoke painted aluminum wheels are standard. Seven-spoke chrome wheels are available.

Inside, the Buick Encore's organic styling carries over to a flowing instrument panel that wraps naturally into the door panels. A prominent central instrument panel houses the large, full-color, seven-inch LCD display for the IntelliLink voice-activated radio system. It also features displays for the SiriusXM satellite radio, as well as available navigation and rear camera systems.

A contemporary mix of dark and light tones distinguishes the cabin, which is accented with ice blue ambient lighting, select use of bright trim and wood-grain trim. Premium seats featuring high-density foam for greater comfort on long drives are trimmed with either a contemporary cloth/leatherette motif or available leather. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are available. The rear seat features a fold-down armrest with cup holders.

More of the Buick Encore's comfort and luxury features - standard and available:
    Remote vehicle start
    Dual-zone automatic climate control
    Rainsense wipers
    Bose premium sound system
Heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls
Six-way, power-adjustable driver's seat with power lumbar adjustment and driver memory.

Buick Encore also features plenty of storage capacity and storage compartments. It offers 18.8 cubic feet (533 liters) of storage behind the split-folding rear seat and 48.4 cubic feet (1,372 liters) with the rear seat folded. With the rear seat in place, there's room for at least six full grocery bags and with the rear seat folded, there's room for golf clubs and overnight bags for a weekend getaway. Even the front passenger seat folds flat to extend the cargo length and accommodate long items that would not normally fit in a vehicle of this size.

Nine exterior colors and three interior color combinations will be offered.

QuietTuning gets 'active'
QuietTuning is the process of defining Buick quality, sound and vibration characteristics and designing and refining the vehicle following a three-point strategy of reducing sounds at their source, blocking sounds from entering the cabin and absorbing any remaining sounds.

For the Buick Encore, specific content was applied to achieve 40 sound benchmarks for refinement, including Buick's first application of active noise cancellation. With it, ceiling-mounted microphones detect engine noise, the frequencies of which are processed by a computer that directs counteracting sound waves through the audio system's speakers and subwoofer.

Additional standard QuietTuning features:
Acoustically treated headliner with a tuned gap between it and the high-strength-steel roof panel
Sound-absorbing materials used in the cabin, under the hood and in the wheel house liners
HydraMatic 6T40 six-speed transmission with neutral gear disengagement
    Quiet-tuned 18-inch Continental tires
    Aero-optimized outside mirrors
    Ultra-quiet engine alternator
Acoustic-laminated windshield and thicker 5mm side window glass
Foam baffle insulation at the opening of body structure cavities.

'One-tire' philosophy sharpens ride and handling characteristics

The new Buick Encore is built on a global small-crossover platform and engineered with a "one-tire" philosophy. Everything is optimized around a single 18-inch tire specification, designed for more precise suspension tuning, driving refinement, quietness and a feeling of control.

The Buick Encore's 100.6-inch (2,555 mm) wheelbase and wide stance - 60.6-inch (1,540 mm) front and rear tracks - contribute to a more confident-feeling driving experience, while a strong structure enables greater suspension precision and a quieter ride. Tuned engine, including two hydraulic mounts, are tailored to the engine's inherent torque axis to disrupt the transmission of vibration and noise. This configuration also helps control the transfer of momentum, resulting in improved dynamic balance.

A MacPherson strut front suspension is used with coil springs, a large stabilizer bar and side-load-compensated front strut modules. The rear suspension incorporates a compound crank (torsion beam) design, with a double-wall, tubular V-shape beam profile with gas-charged twin-tube shocks. It combines all the advantages of a conventional torsion beam axle, including minimal space requirements, with low weight and consistent camber control. Urethane spring isolators are used to dampen noise.

The Buick Encore also features a column-mounted, variable-effort electric power steering system. It contributes to a 36.7-foot (11.2 meters) turning diameter, while also saving fuel compared to an engine-driven power steering pump.

Safety technology helps protect occupants
Buick Encore is designed with technologies - including radar-based features - to help avoid crashes and protect occupants in case one occurs. Technologies that help avoid them:
    Standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control
Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and electronic brake force distribution
Cornering brake control and brake assist
Available all-wheel-drive system that seamlessly shifts power to the rear wheels when required for better traction and handling
Available forward collision alert and lane departure warning
Available front and rear park assist
    Available rear vision camera.

When it comes to occupant protection, the Buick Encore's body structure forms a protective cage around the passenger compartment. Sixty-three percent of the underbody structure is comprised of high-strength steels, while 57 percent of the upper body uses high-strength steels, including ultra-high-strength steel. That protection is complemented with 10 standard air bags, which:
Driver and front passenger frontal air bags
Driver and front passenger knee air bags
Front and rear thorax air bags (all outboard positions)
Side curtain air bags for front and rear outboard passengers.

Buick Encore's suite of safety features is rounded out with exclusive OnStar technology, which includes the Advanced Crash Response System, emergency assistance and more.

Ecotec turbo engine drives efficiency
The Buick Encore is powered by an efficient, power-dense Ecotec 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission. It generates an estimated 140 horsepower (103 kW) and 148 lb.-ft. of torque (200 Nm) between 1,850 rpm and 4,900 rpm. The wide rpm range for the maximum torque - a specific trait of turbocharged engines - helps it deliver a better driving experience and performance.

The 1.4L's turbocharger is integrated within the exhaust manifold, for reduced weight and greater packaging flexibility. A reinforced crankshaft and forged connecting rods deliver additional strength to support the engine's pressurized power and torque over a wide rpm band.

Several of the engine's features contribute to the Buick Encore's overall fuel efficiency:
    A high-efficiency alternator
    Regulated voltage control
    Electronically controlled returnless fuel system
    Deceleration fuel cut-off.

They complement other vehicle-wide systems and components that also help improve efficiency, including low-rolling-resistance tires, electric power steering, neutral idle feature and optimized aerodynamics.

A Hydra-Matic 6T40 six-speed automatic transmission backs the Ecotec 1.4L turbo engine. It is part of a family of six-speed front and all-wheel drive transaxles developed for small cars and crossovers. It has a unique design, with the planetary gearsets positioned on the same axis as the engine crankshaft centerline, making the entire powertrain unit shorter fore-to-aft. This design enables a shorter overall vehicle length, increased interior space, enhanced safety crush zones and lower weight.

The Hydra-Matic 6T40 offers a "steep" first gear and a "tall" overdrive top gear to achieve a wide ratio spread of 6.14:1. This allows the Buick Encore to achieve robust acceleration, as well as fuel efficiency and lower engine noise at highway cruising speeds. A neutral-gear disengagement feature helps enhance smoothness and efficiency.

The Buick Encore will begin arriving at U.S. Buick dealerships in the first quarter of 2013.

Brabus Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake, 2012

  • Brabus Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake, 2012

The new Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake has arrived! And like the first CLS that created a market for four-door coupes, the new five-door model redefines the sporty-elegant wagon. The exclusive final touch in the form of a sophisticated refinement program is now available from BRABUS. The extensive product lineup starts with sporty-elegant aerodynamic-enhancement components for all Shooting Brake models with or without AMG sport package, and features custom-tailored BRABUS wheels with diameters of up to 20 inches. Also part of the BRABUS portfolio are exclusive interior options and engine tuning that delivers up to 455 kW / 619 hp (610 bhp) of power, 1,000 Nm (737 lb-ft) of torque and a top speed of 320 km/h (200 mph).

Sporty-elegant styling paired with aerodynamic efficiency is the trademark of all BRABUS body kits. As always, the body components for the new CLS Shooting Brake were developed in the wind tunnel. They are manufactured from flexible Pur-R-Rim high-grade plastics or from carbon fibers depending on the version.

The CLS 250 and 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY diesel models and the CLS 350 and 500 BlueEFFICIENCY with production aerodynamics outfit can be upgraded with the BRABUS front spoiler, the BRABUS front fascia attachments with integrated LED daytime running lights, the sport fenders and the BRABUS side skirts with integrated entrance lights.

For vehicles equipped with AMG sport package BRABUS offers a striking BRABUS front spoiler lip that attaches to the underside of the front fascia. The CLS 63 AMG can be refined with an additional front spoiler and fender attachments with backlit BRABUS logo. Their clear-coated carbon-fiber construction lends the sport wagon full-blooded racing looks.

BRABUS Monoblock wheels in sizes ranging from 8.5Jx17 to 10.5Jx20 also play a major role in the exclusive BRABUS looks of the new CLS Shooting Brake. The OEM-quality alloy wheels are available in six different designs. The most exclusive version on offer features BRABUS Monoblock F, Q or R designs with a diameter of 20 inches. The latest addition to the BRABUS wheel family is the BRABUS Monoblock R wheel with especially innovative design. Two sets of five double spokes are arranged in two plains. While the inner set of spokes is painted a "Liquid Titanium" shade, the outer spokes are diamond-polished and afterwards sealed with a smoke-colored clear lacquer, lending the wheel its very own character. The largest tires supplied by BRABUS technology partners Continental, Pirelli and YOKOHAMA for the 20-inch version come in size 255/30 ZR 20 in front and in size 295/25 ZR 20 for the rear axle.

The BRABUS suspension options are specifically calibrated to the use of sporty low-profile tires. They were developed in tandem with technology partner BILSTEIN. The lineup ranges from BRABUS sport springs to complete suspensions and the BRABUS suspension module that lowers the ride height of cars equipped with the semi-active AIRMATIC air suspension system by about 35 millimeters.

BRABUS offers the world's largest program of performance tuning for Mercedes-Benz automobiles. The ECO PowerXtra D4 performance kit bumps the power output of the CLS 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY by 22.8 kW / 31 hp and boosts peak torque to 560 Nm (446 lb-ft).

For the CLS 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY there is BRABUS ECO PowerXtra D6S tuning. Thanks to its plug-and-play design the auxiliary control unit can be installed by any authorized Mercedes-Benz workshop and any BRABUS center of competence in less than 45 minutes.

As a special feature this high-tech performance tuning system allows the driver to influence the power yield through the selection of the transmission program of the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic gearbox. In Eco mode only peak torque is increased, from standard 620 Nm to 690 Nm (509 lb-ft) between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm. This selection leaves the maximum power output unchanged. If sport mode is activated or gears are shifted manually, the increase in peak torque is accompanied by a boost in power output from 195 kW / 265 hp (261 bhp) to 230 kW / 313 hp (308 bhp) at a low 3,600 rpm. The tuned turbodiesel accelerates from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.9 seconds. Top speed is limited electronically to 250 km/h (155 mph).

It goes without saying that BRABUS performance tuning is also available for the gasoline-powered versions of the CLS Shooting Brake. The BRABUS B50 - 500 performance tuning was developed for the V8 Biturbo engine of the CLS 500 BlueEFFICIENCY. As the name indicates, this tuning kit produces 368 kW / 500 hp (493 bhp) and a peak torque of 720 Nm (531 lb-ft) and in conjunction with the BRABUS Vmax unit gives the wagon a top speed of 300 km/h (186 mph).

Two ultra-powerful tuning options are available for the top-of-the-line CLS 63 AMG model. Both BRABUS power upgrades for the 5.5-liter eight-cylinder Biturbo engine comprise an auxiliary control unit for the engine electronics and an additional water-to-air intercooler powered by an auxiliary electric pump. In both cases the lower temperature of the charge air benefits not only power yield but also engine longevity even under extreme operating conditions. After the installation of the BRABUS B63 - 620 version the driver commands 455 kW / 619 hp (610 bhp) of power at a low 5,500 rpms. Simultaneously peak torque grows from 900 to 1.000 Nm (663 to 737 lb-ft), on tap between 2,250 and 3,750 rpm. A sprint time from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) of just 4.2 seconds is just as unique for a wagon as is the top speed of 320 km/h (200 mph) that the car attains in conjunction with the BRABUS V/max unit.

As an ideal complement to the engine tuning, BRABUS offers a sport exhaust system with butterfly valve for the CLS 63. At the push of a button on the steering wheel the driver can switch between a discrete and quiet "Coming Home" mode and "Sport," which produces a decidedly sporty exhaust note. The stainless-steel exhaust system also adds some visual highlights with its two beautifully styled ceramic-coated dual tailpipes.

For all other CLS engines BRABUS offers fully stainless-steel quad sport exhaust systems. The precision-calibrated exhaust systems also optimize power yield and produce a sportier exhaust note.

A BRABUS clutch-type limited-slip differential with a locking rate of 40 percent optimizes traction and handling in fast corners on all CLS versions.

All BRABUS engines are operated with MOTUL high-performance lubricants and like all BRABUS components are backed by the one-of-a-kind BRABUS limited tuning warranty of three years up to 100,000 kilometers / 62,000 miles.

Exclusive interior design that leaves nothing to be desired is yet another BRABUS specialty that comes to life in the company upholstery shop. The product lineup for the new Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake ranges from attractive accessories to custom-tailored interiors crafted from especially soft, breathable and highly durable BRABUS Mastik leather and Alcantara. Scuff plates with backlit BRABUS logo, a speedometer with 340-km/h or 400-km/h dial (211 or 250 mph) and the tables for the rear compartment that attach to the back of the front seats add sporty highlights as do decidedly sporty aluminum components such as pedal pads, door-lock pins and shift paddles for the steering wheel. High-end clear-coated carbon-fiber inlays for dashboard and center console in any desired color are also part of the program as are wood inlays in any desired color and with any desired grain.

To top it all off, BRABUS offers a custom-tailored multimedia concept for the five-door CLS - including the integration of an Apple iPad if desired.

Furthermore, the Auto Start/Stop function is available for both manual and automatic transmissions. The BMW EfficientDynamics technology package also includes the ECO PRO mode, which can be activated via the Driving Experience Control button that is standard on all models. The intelligent xDrive four-wheel drive technology will also be offered for the new BMW 1-Series in the future. The BMW 120d xDrive and the BMW M135i xDrive will be the first 1-Series models to have this four-wheel drive technology.

The dynamic and stretched lines of the three-door BMW 1-Series create a silhouette that is unmistakable in the compact car segment and which also gives this vehicle its own distinctive look, distinguishing it from the 5-door model. Wide doors with frameless windows, with a holistic appearance that even spans across the B pillar, along with an especially low and flat roofline, contribute to the sporty and elegant character of the vehicle. For those customers wanting a more individual and exclusive version of the BMW 1-Series, the new three-door model is offered in the BMW Sport Line and the BMW Urban Line versions with special options and equipment. What's more, an M Sport package is also available for the new BMW 1-Series three-door model.

Like the 5-door version, the new three-door BMW 1-Series offers increased agility and driving comfort compared to the previous model. The interior is also more spacious. For example, the new three-door BMW 1-Series can be configured with a choice of seating for two or three passengers in the rear compartment. The exclusive look and feel of the interior, the wide range of standard features and equipment that even includes air conditioning, along with the many optional driver assistance systems and BMW ConnectedDrive mobility services available, underscore the premium status and progressive character of the new three-door BMW 1-Series.

The design: sporty elegance as a sign of intense driving pleasure.
The new three-door BMW 1-Series is immediately recognisable as a dynamic and sporty individualist in the premium compact segment. The long bonnet, the aft-set passenger compartment, the long wheelbase and short overhangs are typical design elements that make this vehicle a genuine BMW when viewed from any angle. Yet at the same time, the new BMW 1-Series has its own young and sporty design language, giving the compact three-door model an individual personality of its very own. When viewed from the side, the flowing lines of the body exemplify the vehicle's athletic grace. This sporty and elegant appearance authentically expresses the balance of agility and comfort that is epitomised by this vehicle.

When compared with its predecessor, the new model offers more than good looks and improved performance and handling - there is even more interior space. This has been achieved by intelligently expanding the exterior dimensions and proportions of the new model. The length of the new threedoor BMW 1-Series is 4,324 millimetres (85 millimetres longer than before), with a wheelbase of 2,690 millimetres (30 millimetres longer) and an overall width of 1,765 millimetres (17 millimetres wider) - the height is still 1,421 millimetres. Thus the track width has been extended (front: + 51 millimetres, rear: +72 millimetres), and there is more rear legroom (+21 millimetres) and a luggage compartment with a volume of 360 litres (30 litres more than in the predecessor model).

Like the 5-door model, the front of the new three-door BMW 1-Series is dominated by the large BMW kidney grille, the contoured headlight units and a three-part air intake. The grille leans forward to underscore the dynamic character of the new compact model, and the three-dimensional surfaces surrounding the kidney create vibrant light effects. The upper edge of the dual round headlights is partially covered by accentuating trim, or with LED accent lighting if the vehicle is equipped with optional Bi-Xenon headlights. The front turn indicators are integrated in the inner light rings of the headlights; the side indicators are integrated in the exterior mirrors.

The characteristic attribute of the body styling of the three-door model is seen in the sporty and elegant side profile of the vehicle, which is dominated by the wide doors. The frameless door windows and the rear side windows form a consistent and holistic visual element that extends into the rear end, thus emphasising the dynamic appearance of the vehicle. This impression is further underlined by a visible curved indentation near the Hofmeister kink at the base of the C pillar. This makes the extended roofline appear extremely flat. The protruding contoured edge of the side skirt and the sweeping line along the lower door surface suggest dynamic forward motion combined with a roadhugging stance. The characteristic drive concept of the compact BMW can be seen in the bold styling of the rear wheel arches.

The wide rear quarter panels end flush with the wheels so that the powerful stature of the new three-door BMW 1-Series is distinctly highlighted when viewed from the rear. The tail lights, which are positioned far to each side, are surrounded by a three-dimensional bezel. If the vehicle is equipped with the optional Xenon headlights, the package also includes tail lights that are comprised of L-shaped LED light banks. The third brake light is integrated in the roof spoiler. The contours of both the rear apron and the front bumper are dominated by V-shaped lines that draw the eye down toward the road surface, creating a perspective that emphasises the stable and road-hugging stance of the new three-door BMW 1-Series.

Premium interior ambience and driver-centric cockpit.
The dynamic lines and surface contours of the driver-centric cockpit are typical BMW and create a sense of forward thrust and movement - all interior elements are made of premium materials which add to the upscale flair of the new three-door BMW 1-Series. The design of the spacious interior is sporty and functional, just perfect for sheer driving pleasure. The instrument panel, centre console and door panels reflect the layering concept that dominates the look and feel of the interior. These component sections overlap to create the impression of a holistic and organic structure comprised of matching individual modules.

In conjunction with an optional navigation system and the BMW Professional radio, the new three-door BMW 1-Series is equipped with the BMW iDrive control system. In addition to the controller located on the centre console, the system features a freestanding flat-screen monitor. Depending on the model selected, a control display measuring 6.5 inches or 8.8 inches is integrated in the instrument panel.

The front seats are equipped with the standard Easy Entry function, giving passengers convenient access to the rear compartment. With large door pockets, a spacious glove compartment and two cup holders on the centre console, there is ample space for stowing travel items. An optional storage package is available that includes compartments in the rear side panels as well as net pockets on the backs of the front seats. The 360-litre luggage compartment can be expanded up to 1,200 litres by folding down the 60: 40 split rear seat backrest. If the optional through-loading system is ordered, the rear backrest can be folded down in a 20: 40 configuration.

Individualisation with the BMW Lines.
A selection of three non-metallic colours and eight metallic paint finishes are offered for the exterior of the new three-door BMW 1-Series. One non-metallic and five metallic colours are available for the M135i model. The standard interior features Satin Silver trim and upholstery in Move cloth design. Optional interior trims and seats upholstered in Dakota leather (offered in two different colours) are also available. All upholstery variants are also offered for the optional sport seats. Buyers wanting to personalise the new three-door BMW 1-Series can select one of the BMW Lines packages, which include exclusive design and equipment features that intensify the sporty or progressive character of the new compact model.

The BMW Sport Line is distinguished by exterior elements finished in high-gloss black: the kidney grille slats, the strut and the bezels for the inlet vents, as well as the trim on the rear bumper. Other equipment includes 16-inch light alloy star-spoke wheels, black trim for the exhaust pipe and door sill finishers with aluminium inserts and "BMW Sport" lettering. Other additional options are mirror caps in high-gloss black and 17-inch light alloy bi-colour wheels. Among the exclusive interior design features are sport seats with selected upholstery, a sport leather steering wheel with contrasting red stitching, a sliding armrest, high-gloss black interior trim and accent trim in matt Red Coral. The look of the instrument cluster is distinguished by special chronoscales and digits. The car key is accented in red. The tone of the ambient interior lighting can be switched between orange and white, and there is additional lighting for the centre console and the footwells.

The three-door BMW 1-Series can be delivered with the BMW Urban Line package, which is easy to recognise with chrome kidney grille slats having white sides, as well as a white strut across the front centre air intake. Exclusively in conjunction with the BMW Urban Line, the bezels for the front inlet vents at each side are finished in the colour of the vehicle. Additional individualism is achieved with the white trim strip on the rear bumper, 16-inch light alloy V-spoke wheels or optional 17-inch wheels with a white, gloss-lathed finish, and door sill finishers with aluminium inserts and "BMW Urban" lettering. White exterior mirror caps are also offered as an option. The exclusive flair of the interior is highlighted with selected cloth or leather seats, a sport leather steering wheel, a sliding armrest and interior trim made of innovative acrylic glass. Other interior trim choices include white or black with accent lines in matt Oxide Silver. The BMW Urban Line package also offers mood lighting effects with ambient and welcome lights in the colour variations orange and LED Royal Blue or white and Royal Blue. Lights on the B-pillar intensify the experience. The car key features white detailing.

BMW M135i: M-typical body styling for optimised air intake, "sports car feeling" in the interior.

The performance potential of the BMW M135i is reflected in its individual exterior and interior design features, which are integral parts of the series equipment in this BMW M Performance automobile. The body details are typical of a car designed to handle the aerodynamic requirements associated with dynamic, high-performance driving situations - it is such details that convey the unique M style and flair. The front apron is typical of M styling that reflects the car's firm and responsive road handling, with the large air intake vents needed to meet the cooling demands of a high-performance straight six-cylinder engine, auxiliary units and oversized brakes. The competitive character of the car can also be seen in the three-dimensional flaps on the outer air vents, a detail inspired by automobile racing. These air inlets take up the space reserved for the fog lights in the other versions of the three-door BMW 1-Series. They are separated by horizontal struts in Ferric Grey metallic - a design detail that distinguishes BMW M Performance cars.

In addition to the BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line and the exterior mirror caps in Ferric Grey, the specially contoured side skirts and 18-inch M light alloy double-spoke wheels with mixed tyres intensify the side profile of the BMW M135i. The rear apron, the lower portion of which is finished in Dark Shadow metallic, also encloses the dual exhaust pipes.

Furthermore, the door sill finishers with aluminium inserts that feature "M135i" lettering match an interior design that expresses the joy of sheer driving pleasure. The interior details include exclusive cloth Hexagon/Alcantara upholstery, an M leather steering wheel with multifunction buttons and blue accent stitching, the BMW Individual roofliner in Anthracite, interior trim in Aluminium Hexagon with matt Estoril Blue or high-gloss black accent lines, gear selector and handbrake with leather gaiters, M driver footrest, speedometer and rev counter with red chronoscales. The colour of the interior lighting is variable, and the car key features blue detailing.

Setting standards for efficiency and power: four-cylinder diesel engines in the BMW 1-Series.

Thanks to a number of optimised technical details and proven BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, the four-cylinder diesel engines offered for the new three-door BMW 1-Series continue to hold the top market position when it comes to power and efficiency. Intelligent further development of the basic engine with an aluminium crankcase, turbocharging and Common Rail direct injection are among the features that will continue the success story of the BMW 118d: the predecessor model was named "World Green Car of the Year" - and the new version is sure to continue in this tradition.

The most sporty diesel model in the new BMW 1-Series heads for the starting line with even more driving pleasure than its predecessor, combined with remarkably low fuel consumption. And this combination is unique in the compact market segment. The three-door BMW 125d is powered by a 2.0-litre engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology that features twostage turbocharging with variable turbine geometry for the high-pressure turbo unit. The Common Rail direct injection is based on piezo injectors with a maximum pressure of 2 000 bar. This results in even more responsiveness and 10 kW more power than the predecessor model: the new BMW 125d delivers 160 kW/218 hp at 4 000 rpm. Maximum torque of 450 Nm (an increase of 50 Nm) is available between 1 500 and 2 500 rpm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is achieved in just 6.5 seconds (automatic: 6.3 seconds), and the new three-door BMW 125d reaches a top speed of 240 km/h. Along with improved power, the fuel consumption of the engine is some 4% lower than before - just 4.9 litres (4.8 litres)/100 km, with a CO2 emissions level of 129 grams (126 grams) per kilometre in the EU test cycle.

The 2.0-litre diesel engines in the three-door BMW 118d and the three-door BMW 116d also feature variable turbine geometry along with Common Rail direct fuel injection based on solenoid valve injectors with a maximum pressure of 1 600 bar. The engine of the three-door BMW 118d delivers a top performance of 105 kW/143 hp at 4 000 rpm as well as 320 Nm of maximum torque between 1,750 and 2 500 rpm. The engine accelerates the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds (automatic: 8.6 seconds), top speed is 212 km/h. Average fuel consumption is 4.4 to 4.5 litres per 100 kilometres, the CO2 rating is 115 to 118 grams per kilometre (values per EU test cycle, dependent on selected tyre format).

With 85 kW/116 hp at 4 000 rpm and a maximum torque of 260 Nm achieved between 1 750 and 2 500 rpm, the new three-door BMW 116d, whether equipped with manual transmission or an automatic gearbox, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.3 seconds and attains a maximum speed of 200 km/h. Average fuel consumption is 4.3 to 4.5 litres (automatic: 4.4 - 4.5 litres) per 100 kilometres, the CO2 rating is 114 to 117 grams (115 - 119 grams) per kilometre (values per EU test cycle, dependent on selected tyre format).

In addition to powerful and efficient engines, other new technology has been developed for the new BMW 1-Series - for example, the standard six-speed manual transmission and the optional eight-speed automatic transmission, which is the only one of its kind in the compact car segment. Moreover, a broad range of BMW EfficientDynamics technologies significantly contribute toward reducing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. The package includes Brake Energy Regeneration, the Auto Start/Stop function, which can also be used in conjunction with the automatic transmission, ECO PRO mode, which is activated via the standard Driving Experience Control button and promotes a relaxed and fuel-saving driving style. Depending on the model, other innovations include a shift indicator, electrical power steering, automatic air flap control, optimised rear differential and suspension, a map-controlled oil pump, a pressure-driven or rpm-driven fuel pump, a disengageable air-conditioning compressor and tyres with reduced rolling resistance.

A maximum reduction in fuel consumption is achieved through the functions found in the three-door BMW 116d EfficientDynamics Edition. The vehicle is powered by a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine and is equipped with additional technological features for reducing fuel consumption and emissions - with optimised power train efficiency, aerodynamics and rolling resistance. With 85 kW/116 hp and a maximum torque of 260 Nm, the three-door BMW 116d EfficientDynamics accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.5 seconds and attains a maximum speed of 195 km/h. Average fuel consumption is 3.8 litres per 100 kilometres, the CO2 rating is 99 grams per kilometre (values per EU test cycle), thus positioning the vehicle at the top of the BMW line in terms of efficiency.

Audi A4, 2013

  •  Audi A4, 2013

A bestseller has become even more attractive: Audi has updated the A4 series. New solutions for efficiency, driving dynamics and infotainment, along with an even more attractive design, attest the "Vorsprung durch Technik" achieved by the A4 Sedan, the A4 Avant, the A4 allroad quattro and the S4.

The Design
The A4 is Audi's bestseller - for 39 years now and in its eighth generation. The brand has sold ten million such models in total. The Audi A4, with its elegance, sportiness and emotional appeal, forms the centerpiece of the Audi brand. And now the design has become even more clearly defined and striking in all models - the Sedan, the Avant, the allroad quattro and the S4.

The new look further accentuates the horizontal lines at the front end. The engine hood is more arched, the upper corners of the single frame grille are tapered, and the cross ribs and the Audi rings are highlighted three-dimensionally. The grille is painted gray, with high-gloss black on the six-cylinder models or in combination with the S line exterior package. The redesigned bumpers are striking with their angular air inlets, their revised grilles and the flat front fog lights. The Audi A4 allroad quattro is distinguished by its grille's horizontal chrome applications and by the round fog lights.

The headlights have also changed, with a slight wave at the bottom edges, and a re-arranged interior. Xenon plus headlights are available from Audi on request. The LED daytime running lights form a narrow, optically homogeneous band that remains open in the vicinity of the xenon lens. The adaptive light together with dynamic and static cornering lights are available on request.

The tail lights reflect the shape of the headlights, and in combination with xenon plus have homogeneous strips of LEDs. The bumper with its diffuser insert has been redesigned, with the exhaust system always terminating in two tailpipes.

There's a selection of 15 paint finishes, including four new tones. The Sedan and the Avant offer the S line exterior package, while the Avant also includes a roof spoiler.

The modifications have changed the dimensions only by a few millimeters. The Audi A4 Sedan and the Avant each have a length of 4.70 meters (15.42 ft), while the A4 allroad quattro and the S4 are 4.72 meters (15.49 ft) long. The wheelbases for all models are 2.81 meters (9.22 ft), and the width is 1.83 and 1.84 meters, respectively (6.0 and 6.04 ft). The height varies between 1.41 and 1.50 meters (4.63 and 4.92 ft) depending on the body version.

The Interior
The interior of the Audi A4 models has also been refined. Audi offers a wide selection of new steering wheels with chrome and high-gloss inlays, with the leather sport steering wheel also featuring a flattened lower rim. The steering arm and the ignition key have been modified. High-gloss applications and the slender chrome trim at the controls add elegance to the interior.

The elaborate finish makes operation even simpler and more intuitive. The MMI navigation plus system now features four instead of eight buttons, with a script function integrated in the volume control dial. Other improvements concern operation of the automatic transmission, the efficient air conditioning systems, Audi drive select and the multifunction steering wheel. The seat heating and air conditioning are now directly operated at the respective buttons.

The high level of workmanship is as much a matter of course for Audi as a sure touch in the range of colors. All interior colors - except black - have been re-coordinated. The upholstery range has also been revised, with Fine Nappa leather replacing Valcona leather. The new, single-part cluster trim has been adapted in color to the interior, while the inlays are available in Aluminum Trigon, walnut dark brown and fine grain ash natural. Especially eye-catching is the Beaufort oak plywood inlay.

The interior of the S line sport package comes in black, refined with high-quality applications. 18-inch wheels or the optional 19-inch wheels and an S line sport suspension that lowers the body by 30 millimeters (1.18 in) complete the package. Audi exclusive and Audi exclusive line offer further individualized options.

The Audi A4 Sedan's luggage compartment still has its 480-liter capacity - 962 liters with the rear seats folded down (16.95 and 33.97 cubic ft). The A4 Avant and the A4 allroad quattro have 490 and 1,430 liters, respectively (17.30 and 50.50 cubic ft), with Audi offering an optional electrically operated tailgate for both models.

The Engines
The new Audi A4's drive system sets new standards. The consumption levels have dropped by 11 percent on average, despite the increased power and torque of many of the engines. In the Sedan and the Avant each, Audi offers any of six TDI and four gasoline engines, with 23 possible engine-transmission combinations. All engines are supercharged direct-injection systems; the start-stop system and the recuperation system are standard throughout.

The TDI engines combine pulling power with pioneering efficiency, with the four-cylinder versions presenting extensive modifications. A new centrifugal pendulum-type absorber (in the 2.0 TDI with 100 kW, 120 kW or 130 kW with quattro drive) in the dual-mass flywheel makes engine running even more refined and quieter at low revs, for even earlier upshifting and savings of up to 0.2 liters per 100 km.

The most economical variant in the model family is the Audi A4 2.0 TDI with 100 kW (136 hp). In the Sedan, this engine needs only 4.2 liters of fuel per 100 km (56.0 US mpg) on average - a CO2 equivalent of just 112 grams per km (180.25 g/mile). The new A4 2.0 TDI with 120 kW (163 hp), also optimized for maximum efficiency, manages with 4.4 liters of diesel per 100 km (53.46 US mpg). This equates to 115 grams CO2 per km (185.07 g/mile). Both engines are available for the Sedan and the Avant.

In addition, three other four-cylinder diesel engines are available - with 88 kW (120 hp), 105 kW (143 hp) and 130 kW (177 hp). They can also be ordered for the allroad quattro, apart from the entry-level version. Three V6 TDI units complete the line. The 3.0 TDI with 150 kW (204 hp) (not for the allroad quattro) is the most efficient six-cylinder engine in its class worldwide; in the A4 Sedan it consumes an average of just 4.9 liters of fuel per 100 km (48.0 US mpg). The second variant, the 3.0 TDI, generates 180 kW (245 hp), with an especially clean diesel version.

The Audi A4 series also presents the latest state of the art in gasoline engine technology. A new highlight of the TFSI family is the new 1.8-liter engine, available for the Sedan and the Avant. The four-cylinder engine delivers sporty thrust, with a power output of 125 kW (170 hp) and 320 Nm (236.02 lb-ft) of torque. The average consumption in the Audi A4 Sedan is limited to 5.6 liters per 100 km (42.0 US mpg), or 134 grams CO2 per km (215.65 g/mile). That is a decrease in consumption of 19 percent compared with the predecessor engine.

The new 1.8 TFSI engine features many innovations: in the control of its valves and their lift, in the novel thermal management system, in the fuel injection system, in the turbocharger and in the integration of the exhaust manifold in the cylinder head. The engine weighs 3.5 kilograms (7.72 lb) less and its internal friction has sharply decreased.

The entry-level gasoline engine is the 1.8 TFSI with 88 kW (120 hp). The 2.0 TFSI - as the only spark-ignition engine also available in the Audi A4 allroad quattro - delivers 155 kW (211 hp). At the top of the line is the 3.0 TFSI in two variants. In the Audi A4 the V6, to follow a bit later, affords 200 kW (272 hp). In the sporty Audi S4 top model its power is an impressive 245 kW (333 hp).

Drivetrain
The wide range of drivetrains is typical of Audi. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the Sedan and Avant models with front-wheel drive; most variants offer continuously variable multitronic as an option. The quattro versions have either the manual transmission or (as of the 2.0 TDI with 130 kW (177 hp)) the seven-speed S tronic on board. The Audi A4 allroad quattro employs a manual transmission or S tronic with all engine versions.

The innovative thermal management system shortens the warm-up phase of the manual transmission, among other things, and thereby reduces friction loss. All transmissions are distinguished by convenient and precise operation, high efficiency and a wide spread of gear ratios - the long ratios in the higher gears reduces fuel consumption, while the short ratios in the lower gears benefit the dynamics.

The quattro permanent all-wheel drive is standard on the Audi A4 allroad quattro, and available in the Sedan and Avant from the 2.0 TDI with 105 kW (143 hp). The A4 family uses the self-locking center differential here. In regular driving operation it primarily transmits the engine torque to the rear wheels in the ratio of 40 to 60. If necessary, redistribution occurs within the shortest possible time. The torque vectoring function supplements the work of the center differential with finely incremented brake applications, to make handling even more precise and safer.

In the V6 quattro variants Audi offers the sport differential as a supplement, lending maximum precision and high traction to the A4 when cornering at the handling limits. The high-end component actively distributes the power between the rear wheels as required.

Chassis
The chassis of the Audi A4 is striking with its sporty precision, high ride comfort and superior safety. The mounts of the rear suspension control arms and the characteristics of the shock absorbers have been even more finely tuned. Most of the components of the five-link front suspension and the trapezoidal-link rear suspension are made of aluminum.

The electromechanical power steering is new in all models of the series. The direct gear ratios convey precise road contact; slight brake applications counteract pulling to the side on unevenly slippery surfaces. The electromechanical power steering requires no energy for straight-ahead motion, thereby reducing fuel consumption by up to 0.3 liters per 100 km. This is equivalent to a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 7 g/km (11.27 g/mile).

Another high-end feature that gives the Audi A4 a special status in its class is Audi drive select. In the basic package, the driver can switch the characteristic of the accelerator, the shift points of the automatic transmission, the power steering and the automatic air conditioning between the four modes "comfort," "auto," "dynamic" and "efficiency." If there is an onboard navigation system, the additional "individual" mode is also included.

Further modules are optional - adaptive cruise control or the cruise control system, the sport differential, the suspension with damper control and dynamic steering. By means of a superposition gear, the gear ratio is adjusted in a continuously variable manner depending on the driven speed; at the handling limits small interventions compensate for understeering and oversteering.

All front-wheel-drive versions of the Audi A4 feature the electronic stabilization program (ESP) with electronic limited slip differential. In dynamic driving the system further improves handling and safety by initiating minimum brake interventions at the front wheel that is subject to a reduced load on the inside of the curve. The large wheel brakes - with ventilated front and rear disks in many variants - offer excellent stopping power and can be precisely modulated.

All Audi A4 variants roll off the assembly line on elegant aluminum wheels. Depending on the engine version, they are 16 or 17 inches in size; tires with optimized rolling resistance belong to the 205/60 and 225/50 series. The A4 3.0 TFSI has 18-inch wheels with 245/40 series tires. The line of options ranges to 19 inches with 255/35 series tires. Four of the 18 available wheels are new designs. The A4 allroad quattro offers four independent designs.

Assistance systems
Audi offers highly developed assistance systems for the A4 family, for making driving even more relaxed. Standard on all variants is the new driver information system with break recommendation - it detects and draws the driver's attention to deviations from typical driving behavior on the basis of steering motions and other parameters.

The adaptive cruise control assistance system keeps the Audi A4 at a constant distance from the preceding vehicle at speeds between zero and 200 km/h (124.27 mph). If the threat of a rear-end collision becomes imminent at speeds below 30 km/h (18.64 mph), the system will execute a full brake application. Audi active lane assist supports the driver in keeping to his lane. A camera detects the lane markings and the system makes slight corrections to the steering if necessary. Audi side assist monitors the space behind the Audi A4 by radar and detects any vehicles in the blind spot, for example.

Infotainment systemsAudi offers a whole kit of state-of-the-art infotainment systems for its A4 series. The chorus CD radio with eight speakers is standard, while the MMI navigation plus system with large hard disk, color monitor, 3D graphics and DVD player forms the top of the line. Voice control and the optional digital audio broadcasting are further improvements to the system.

The high-end supplement to the MMI navigation plus system is the Bluetooth online car phone. Via Audi connect the system provides special services in the car, such as voice-controlled Google searches for points of interest and navigation with Google Earth pictures, along with Google Street View. Audi online traffic information, another such service, gives the driver the latest news on congestion along the selected route. The WLAN hotspot, another feature of the Bluetooth online car phone, allows passengers in the Audi A4 to surf the internet and send e-mails as they please with their mobile devices.

The Audi S4
The Audi S4, available in the Sedan and Avant versions, employs the most powerful engine in the line - the 3.0 TFSI with 245 kW (333 hp) and 440 Nm (324.53 lb-ft) torque. The Sedan's average fuel consumption is a mere 8.0 liters per 100 km (29.40 US mpg) - with an impressive performance: The Audi S4 accelerates in 5.0 seconds from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) and achieves an electronically limited maximum speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph).

The modified Audi S4 is identifiable from the changes to the headlights, the bumpers, the air inlets and colors. The interior also contains subtle changes in appearance. The S sport suspension and 18-inch wheels featured on the S4 deliver outstanding road grip.

Prices
The prices of the A4 have changed only slightly, despite the extensive upgrading. For example, the Audi A4 2.0 TFSI costs just 475 euros more - the sporty Sedan is now listed at 35,425 euros.

Aston Martin DB9, 2013

  • Aston Martin DB9, 2013

The Aston Martin has revealed full details of the latest major enhancements to its iconic Sports GT car, the luxurious and potent DB9.

Appearing hot on the heels of the all-new Vanquish Super GT, the introduction of 13 Model Year Aston Martin DB9 gives the British luxury sports car maker the perfect opportunity to further enrich the appeal of its mainstay in the GT sector, with significant developments affecting styling inside and out, plus key changes under the new DB9's classically beautiful 'skin'.

The styling changes see Aston Martin DB9 adopt an even more lithe, fluid and pure form reminiscent of the outgoing Aston Martin Virage which ceases production with immediate effect. Taking a classic Aston Martin GT silhouette as its base, the new DB9 adds a more pronounced rear boot 'flip' to further enhance the aerodynamic performance of the car.

The exterior design of the DB9 communicates a powerfully assertive yet elegant character. The surfaces display taught lines and subtle muscular forms that point to the underlying power of this renowned Sports GT.

Aston Martin DB9 sits low and wide, visually 'planting' the car on the road, communicating a clearly athletic stance. The car's inherent width is accentuated by the 'light catcher' feature which runs from the lower front bumper and continues along the sill of the car creating a chiselled, determined look.

Available from launch in either Coupe or Volante body styles, DB9 13MY clearly has a strong breadth of appeal.

Bi-xenon headlamps provide the car with a clear focus, while subtle feature lines run along and underneath the headlamps, visually widening the car.

A large lower front grille feeds air into the standard Carbon Ceramic Braking system, while the front splitter also serves to visually widen the car. For those DB9 buyers in search of an even more sporty appearance there is now a carbon fibre front splitter available as part of the exterior Carbon Pack.

Look a little closer and the true beauty of the Aston Martin DB9's details becomes apparent. The front grille, for instance - inspired by the design of Aston Martin's sold-out One-77 hypercar - features five horizontal vanes which are chamfered to create an aerofoil profile. Meanwhile the bonnet vents are authentic zinc with distinctive vanes. These, along with the new grille and pronounced side strakes, are classic Aston Martin design cues.

Aston Martin DB9 13MY also features Aston Martin's integrated side strake and LED side-repeaters. The long strake accentuates the lean, long lines of the DB9's nose. Once again, Aston Martin's craftsmanship is clearly demonstrated in the use of metal grilles and clean lines of the polished metal castings.

At the rear of the car, the Aston Martin DB9's wide track width and muscular rear haunches clearly communicate the power delivered at the rear wheels.

The inside, as out, the revised DB9 becomes yet more elegant and more luxurious. Unmistakably Aston Martin, the Sports GT's opulently-appointed interior boasts authentic materials and the highest levels of attention to detail.

For instance, Aston Martin DB9 13MY comes with a stunning leather welt feature first seen on Virage. Inspired by luxury leather goods, the welts have been designed and developed by Aston Martin's master craftsmen. Requiring meticulous levels of control to hand stitch and specially-developed manufacturing facilities, the welts are created by sandwiching a narrow strip of leather between two opposing leather seat panels, and fixed using precise stitching.

A further demonstration of Aston Martin's renowned attention to detail and craftsmanship can be seen in the jewel-like glass switchgear used throughout the interior of the revised DB9. Details such as these glass switches clearly demonstrate the luxury sports car maker's commitment to the use of authentic, high value materials.

Those DB9 buyers seeking an even more sporting ambience inside might be tempted by an additional interior option on 2013 Aston Martin DB9 - Aston Martin's lightweight seats. These are available when the 2+0 seating option is selected and use a state-of-the-art carbon fibre and Kevlar® composite structure.

When specified, the seats save 17kg per car as well as offering occupants more support at the shoulders. This improves comfort and reduces stress on the back during long stints of focused dynamic driving in particular.

Aston Martin Chief Executive Officer Dr Ulrich Bez said: "I am very excited to be unveiling the new DB9 now. My team here at Gaydon has been working hard for many months to improve and update key aspects of this superb Sports GT - the mainstay of our sports car range - and I believe the results to be exceptional.

"Aside from the undeniably beautiful exterior styling and now even more luxurious interior, there are many important and impressive engineering changes that demonstrate Aston Martin's renowned ability to create compelling cars in the modern era."

Engineering - great British innovation
This Aston Martin DB9 sees the introduction of the new generation AM11 V12 engine. The new V12 takes some of the 'Gen4' VH architecture hardware technology developed for Aston Martin's forthcoming all-new super GT, the Vanquish, but has been tuned to suit the character of DB9. The result is an engine with effortless torque of up to 620 Nm and peak power of 517 PS - both significantly improved versus the outgoing unit.

Key features of the AM11 unit include a revised block and new head including dual variable valve timing, enlarged throttle bodies, uprated fuel pump, revised intake manifold and machined combustion chambers.

Meanwhile, DB9 13MY achieves compliance with the latest European pedestrian protection regulations and does so in a new way that is without any compromise to the exterior design of the car and does without the need for otherwise surplus deployable systems.

To accomplish this, Aston Martin's designers and engineers have worked together to make significant changes to the underbody structure of the car including a lowered engine, new bonnet, front bumper construction and grille surround moulding.

Their resulting design is the subject of patent pending applications and enables the grille to move rearwards on impact, whilst the central and outboard chin stiffeners give rigidity to the lower structure and support achievement of the leg impact regulations. Cut-outs on the front wing catwalks contribute to the achievement of the headform regulation.

This means Aston Martin is able to avoid conventional solutions such as the use of plastic grilles and straightforward nose cone bumpers that stretch up in front of the bonnet. Instead, it has created a clever new and bespoke solution that preserves the unmistakable visual appeal of the VH architecture leading edge bonnet and its extruded aluminium grille.

Dr Bez said: "The new AM11 V12 engine together with our unique and patent pending solution for enhanced pedestrian protection - these are clear examples of the engineering excellence that continues to make Aston Martin the creator of the most desired and admired luxury sports cars in the world."

Chassis - important upgrades all round
The 2013 Aston Martin DB9 boasts a number of important enhancements over the outgoing car's already impressive inventory. The braking system, for instance, now uses as standard Carbon Ceramic Matrix (CCM) discs and calipers supplied by acknowledged global brake experts Brembo.

While this DB9 offers a refined, comfortable sports GT drive experience, the new carbon brakes provide the confidence and reassurance of reduced brake fade when pressing the car to its sports capability.

CCM consists of a compound of carbon fibre which is impregnated with silicon, injected into a mould and baked at ultra-high temperature. The resulting material is not only much tougher than conventional cast iron discs but also dissipates heat more rapidly to provide reduced fading.

The brake rotors, (398mm diameter at the front, 360mm at the rear), are mounted onto the bespoke disc bells using a 'floating disc' system. This allows the discs to flex relative to their mountings thereby making them less prone to 'judder'.

The discs are cross-drilled to help keep the brake pads clean while also helping to ensure that gases emitted by the pads during braking do not build up between the pad and disc surface. The holes also help to cool the surface of the pads and the discs themselves. Air intakes mounted behind the lower front grille also force feed air into the brake discs to aid cooling.

Saving around 12.5 kg versus a conventional cast iron system the Aston Martin DB9's CCM brakes not only reduce overall vehicle weight but also mean that a better balance between ride comfort and handling can be struck. The lower rotational mass also gives improved acceleration, braking and steering feel.

The luxury sports car also boasts Aston Martin's 'Gen4' VH architecture version of the brand's Adaptive Damping System (ADS). This next generation ADS has been enhanced to include three modes: Normal, Sport and Track.

In 'Normal' mode, the damping is set to deliver the greatest ride comfort, with the electronically controlled dampers automatically adjusting to provide the optimum settings to suit driver input, speed and the road surface quality. In 'Sport' mode, the damping is set-up to be more focused at delivering sharper handling and control during dynamic driving while in the 'Track' mode the damping operates within the range of its stiffest settings.

The different damping modes available help appreciably broaden DB9's character, adapting its set-up to suit the driver's requirements in different contexts. It can be a comfortable and compliant GT car in Normal mode as well as being a firm and direct sports car in Sport setting and offering highly precise flat cornering in Track mode.

Equipment - luxury comes as standard
As befits a luxury GT in this class 2013 DB9 of course features convenience items such as automatic headlights, now operated by a new master switch unit control panel located on the lower instrument panel beneath the driver's side air-vent.

Automatic windscreen wipers are also a standard-fit feature, with their operation triggered by a rain sensor built into the header pod in front of the rear-view mirror.

Arch-filling 20-inch alloys wheels in a variety of designs, full-grain leather interior, leather sports steering wheel, electrically adjustable Sports seats with side airbags, memory seats and exterior mirrors, satellite navigation, automatic temperature control, trip computer and Organic Electroluminescent (OEL) displays - the DB9 13MY's list of standard equipment is suitably generous while buyers keen to further enhance the luxury look and feel of their Aston Martin sports car can select from an extensive range of optional equipment features.

Aston Martin DB9 13MY features the optional reversing camera currently available on the Rapide four-door sports car and forthcoming Vanquish super GT. The camera - standard in the US market - is integrated into the rear boot lid above the number plate, with the image visible on the LCD screen folding out of the centre stack. The reversing camera is activated when reverse gear is selected and is deactivated once the car is driving forwards at more than 5 mph.

Meanwhile there are two Carbon Packs introduced on DB9 13MY - one exterior and one interior - to offer further personalisation possibilities. All of the carbon fibre has a 2 x 2 twill design that is finished with a clear lacquer.

The exterior pack comprises carbon fibre front splitter and rear diffuser, carbon fibre mirror arms and caps and dark tailpipes with a graphitic finish. The interior pack offers a carbon fibre upper facia, carbon fibre gear selector paddles and carbon fibre door pulls.

Buyers can opt for either Aston Martin wings or DB9 headrest embroidery. The DB9 embroidery design has been refreshed and also has a new stitch pattern on 13MY cars.

Finally, a leather headlining is now available as an option on Aston Martin DB9. The large central panel of the headlining can be finished in leather, while the cant rail trim and header trim remain Alcantara-coloured.

Summarising the significantly enhanced appeal of the 2013 DB9, product manager Andy Haslam said: "DB9 has, rightly, been positioned at the hub of our GT segment offerings for some years now.

The Aston Martin DB9 13MY is available to order now through Aston Martin dealers worldwide, with the first cars making their market debuts in UK and Western Europe in October. Prices are confirmed as £131,995 (UK RRP); €174,994 (German RRP); $185,400 (USA MSRP); and 21,995,000 JPY (Japan RRP).
